Welcome to Science class! We made it through the first week and we are off and running. This week we learned all about our class procedures and rules. We were all put in teams and then learned about our teammates by presenting a "Me Bag" to each other. I was very happy to see that almost every single student presented 5 items or things about themselves to the others. They did a great job!
We had two full days of benchmark testing which wiped us all out. And now we are on to measuring and metrics. We started an assignment on Friday called "Measuring the Measuring Tool" where we worked in partnerships to measure with non-traditional tools such as paper clips and tongue depressors. It is an exercise in estimating, labeling and converting units that introduces us to the importance of standardized measurement and Metrics. We will be finishing this up on Monday and if there are some that don't get finished, they will bring it home for homework Monday night. I will try to post this assignment on the homework pages.
Next week we will be focusing mostly on metrics. They will have homework on Tuesday to practice metric conversions. It will be due on Thursday before their first Quiz of the year.
Friday, look for a lab safety contract to come home, as they will all need one signed by you and them before they can participate in the Science Labs that are up and coming. It is sure going to be a busy week! Thanks for supporting your great kids in their world of Science Discovery ahead.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Campbell
PS: Please be sure your child has some kind of Science notebook by Monday as we will be adding things to it regularly from this point on. Their Science Notebook will be worth a test grade and will be easy to Ace if they will just stay with the class. A 3 ring Binder with 5 tabs and paper is highly suggested or a 5 subject notebook. Or they can just use 2 notebooks- a class notebook and a bellwork notebook for this quarter. Thanks so much!
We made it through week two with measurement labs and learning Lab Safety and about our lab equipment. A lab safety contract should have come home over the weekend and you need to go over it again with your child and sign it. It is due on Monday, but I will be giving a grace period and collect it Tuesday as well for full credit. Please help your kids check and make sure they have all assignments turned in. Most of their grade will be based on participation in class and I am constantly grading their daily tasks to be sure they are all participating fully.
This week we will be finishing up Scientific Method and starting into Motion for 8th graders and Astronomy for the 7th graders. I am so excited! They will all be receiving books this week, so look for those to come home and reinforce to take good care of them. They will have some kind of assessment mid week on the 1st Unit. and they will be getting homework a couple of times this week.
Thank you for your support with helping them succeed.
